I'm not sure if this is easilly coded or not, but it would certainly throw something into the mix. Perhaps if a character reaches 20(or 30, or even 40?) as a UA player, they can have the option of chosing an alignment without joining a following?
I personally really enjoy exploring the realm by my lonesome, so I'll admit this question/suggestion is purely selfish.. I do miss my pretty good aura but I'm not a "following" kinda guy. Not anymore, anyway.

It's an interesting idea, I've seen it done on several muds, but what would you gain from having an alignment like good, evil, or neutral without a following?

To declare their personal beliefs on how things should work. You can be an athiest, and still be one evil bastard (Golson, Ravaged), and some UA's (myself when UA) would rather be something like good/or neutral in actions, and declare such.
Others can flow with the wind, evil one day, neutralish the next, a real nice good guy the next. And remain completely UA....they are what they will to be without trying to stay any one thing.

I tried to keep an open mind, but no, I don't like the idea at all. My answer in the past for those that wanted an alignment was to get a following. Conceptually, I like the idea of aligned = following.

And Tynian has spoken =) I'm just throwing ideas out.

Yep, no harm in throwing the idea out -- if nothing else, they give us things to think about and consider. :)
